Oh Twitter: Land of the Foolish, Home of the Stupid

I’ve got the formula for Twitter fame. After two years of close and careful observation, I’ve come to the conclusion that to attain Twitter fame, one must follow one or all of the following steps very carefully. Either be exceptionally pretty (gorgeous ladies and gents, I can’t knock you for this), or be a completely disrespectful ignoramus. I ought to be more specific about how to be a disrespectful ignoramus. Go on and make entirely tasteless race or gender jokes, explain what a man or woman is based entirely on arbitrary rules, or leak peoples nudes for fun. Yeah, that sounds about right.

That’s not to say that there aren’t people who have enormous Twitter followings because they are in some way intelligent or talented, but there is a massive section of Twitter that is glorifying absolute idiots, retweeting their stupidness and validating their ignorance. Those with the audacity to challenge the stupid get laughed off with more illogical arguments and unfounded insults. I’ve reached the point where I just don’t argue with stupid people because I realize they’re only being intentionally ignorant and offensive, but when did we stop laughing at idiots and start laughing with them.

Are we that starved for entertainment that we have to turn to the dumb asses of our generation to make us laugh? When did it even become funny to laugh at tasteless rape jokes and dark skin/light skin jokes and the general tearing down of people who didn’t do anything to get laughed at?

What is wrong with this generation?

I used to think maybe I take things too seriously, let too much get under my skin. But it’s one thing when stupid people are stupid by themselves. It’s another thing altogether when people put stupid people on a pedestal by laughing along with them instead of saying, “You’re a dumbass.” Do I sound angry? Well I am.

I’m angry because the larger part of an entire generation is too collectively stupid to call out ignorance. I’m mad because we seem to be purposely keeping ourselves dumb. I’m pissed because it is those same ignoramuses who then have the audacity to complain about shit going wrong in their real life. I’m mad because the majority of those fool-hardy kids are black and it’s not as if black kids don’t have enough knocks against them as it is. Some of us are so busy being stupid on purpose that we don’t realize we’re being stupid for real. Twitter isn’t the end all and be all of your life, but we’re sitting around, glorifying stupidity and forgetting that a few years from now, we might actually have to apply for a job and the recruiter probably won’t laugh at your dumbass race joke.

I’m not saying you have to be serious all the time. No one wants a Debbie Downer or a Serious Steven around. But for the sake of all things holy, please stop being intentionally stupid. And stop giving the intentionally stupid license to continue sharing the contents of their rotting brains with the world. Stupid is contagious. Let’s cure it today.
